A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is a systematic mechanical assessment of a used vehicle carried out by an independent mechanic — someone who works for you, not the seller.

The goal is straightforward: identify any existing faults, wear items due for replacement, or signs of previous damage that would affect the vehicle's value or reliability before you commit to buying it.

A good PPI doesn't just tell you whether to buy or walk away. It gives you a detailed picture of the car's condition so you can negotiate the price accordingly, budget for upcoming maintenance, or make an informed decision to look elsewhere.

Perth's climate and driving conditions create specific wear patterns that aren't always obvious to an untrained eye:

Walk away immediately if:

• Engine oil is milky or has a sweet smell — almost certainly a head gasket failure or cracked block
• There are active oil leaks from the engine or transmission with no service records explaining them
• The chassis has been welded or shows signs of significant impact damage
• OBD-II scan reveals multiple stored fault codes the seller claims not to know about
• The VIN on the compliance plate doesn't match the VIN on the windscreen or door jamb
• The seller refuses to allow an independent inspection — this is a significant red flag in itself

Negotiate the price if:

• Brake pads are below 4mm (replacement due soon)
• Tyres are below 3mm tread depth
• Battery is weak on load test
• Minor oil seepage at gaskets (common on higher-kilometre engines, not necessarily critical)
• Air conditioning needs a regas
• Service history is incomplete but the car is otherwise sound
